[ Due to the nature of Peacekeeper assignments and Daryl also working part-time as a mechanic, their schedules don't always align. On one such day when he finds his shift ending earlier than Rick's, he takes a meandering, scenic route back to the Tribute tower, collecting the occasional wildflower while he walks.
By the time Rick returns to their room, a bouquet has been set propped against the pillow on his side of the bed, along with a note to let him know Daryl's picking up Vivi and dinner, signed 'Love you.' ]
[ Dealing with sponsors, giving interviews, maintaining a certain public image... it's all an exhausting job unto itself. These necessary evils of life as Tributes in the Capitol are frequently handled together by Rick and Daryl, helping to make things a bit more bearable. For the times when he can't be there, he wants Rick to at least have some sort of tangible reminder (aside from the intentional marks left across his body during intimate moments) that he isn't alone.
Rick will find a new addition to his nightstand. An octopus themed jewelry box has been set there, which holds a pair of cufflinks, and a folded up sketch Daryl did based on one of his dreams (the same ones that inspired his latest tattoo, as well as this gift). In it, there's a seated figure of a man asleep and holding an upside-down Stetson in his lap, with a small cephalopod curled up within, its own sleeping state made obvious by a trail of Z's floating above its head. The scene is completed by a familiar crossbow propped against the man's legs. ]
[ On one of those days when Rick takes a packed lunch along with Vivi, come lunch time he'll find Daryl's slipped a surprise inside, in the form of specially ordered him-themed* cookies.
(*Except they do feature impressive icing beards. One appears to have been mostly licked off already.) ]
[ They've been provided opportunities at every turn, but neither Rick nor Daryl have really embraced Capitol fashion outside of photo shoots, mandatory public appearances, and sponsorships, instead preferring clothes closer to what they make do with back home. This works to Daryl's advantage with his latest unannounced gift, taking out the guesswork of figuring out what to attach it to.
So the next time Rick pulls on one of his favourite jackets, he'll find a discreet addition dangling from the zipper. ]
[ On one of his many sleepless nights in the Arena, Daryl had severed and cleaned the paw of a rabbit-like muttation, bound the cut end in wire and rope, and fashioned it to look like some kind of crude keychain. A token for luck. He later leaves it hanging in a spot where Rick's likely to see it, intending it to be his. ]
